DEVOTIONS IN MUSIC: THIS I BELIEVE (The Creed)

What are the fundamentals of the Christian faith? What is “essential” to our understanding of God?  As far back as the early church, the Apostles Creed laid out a concise description of God as Father, Christ as Son and Savior, and the Holy Spirit as the third member of the God Head.

A creed is a set of fundamental beliefs. NOTHING is more fundamental than what I believe about God. When I think about what brings this to life for me, the song “This I Believe (The Creed)” fills my heart to overflowing. It is simple enough that I can understand it (at one level) and complex enough to leave me wondering what all it means. Hearing it set to music, strikes a chord of truth in my heart. It is the foundation on which I build my faith.

“I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus”

Why is that important? We live in a world where nothing is black and white. I know; I know. As Christ-followers, we believe the Bible is THE WORD of God. It is literally in black and white (perhaps Jesus’ words are red). Yet that doesn’t mean I understand it. It doesn’t mean that when life’s trials come my way, it makes sense. And it definitely doesn’t mean that I am ready to explain what I believe to someone who challenges my belief.

Since it is that essential, I will hide God’s Word in my heart (Psalms 119:11); I will teach it to my children as I go about my day (Deuteronomy 11:19). I will sing to the Lord a new song of praise (Psalm 96:1).  “For I believe, in the name of Jesus.” (1 John 5:13).
